Champions of Battle: AD7 – Awakening #035

It took a good while for Tosca to mentally recover from the scolding.  Shi wanted to work but Wu’s words cut deep.  For an hour or so, the best Tosca could manage was sitting with the ball droid trying not to cry.  Her previous excited planning took a backseat in her thoughts; too emotionally bruised to think properly.

The droid sat on her work station inside a circular cushion.  Staring at the droid, Tosca felt the strange grooved patterns on its surface.  They have to mean something.  Nothing was made haphazardly, especially Mech Fortress droids.  A simple explanation was most likely.  She couldn’t think clearly about it; the scolding echoed fresh in her mind along with unspoken rebuttals.

A lot of what Doctor Wu said made since but other parts had to be exaggerated paranoia.  She admitted to making a risky mistake but judging from the doctor, Tosca had just set a time bomb in the lab and Rubin’s Trail was already destroyed.  AD7 could have everything she needed to go on a rampage covering the entire world with her machines.  And of course, it was all Tosca’s fault for one careless mistake.

The assistant director was usually stiff, but was it really that important?  Could AD7 do all that just by being near a droid?  That was a little farfetched.  Those words were never spoken.  Knowing Wu, Tosca would have lost her job and any little respect of research circles in that moment.  Instead, she kept her job but now it was time to get back to it.

Tosca had used the energy reading devices so often that they were now stored at her work station.  Shaking her despair, she managed to work the devices and compare them to previous energy readings.  As she suspected there was no change.  No energy readings of any kind were recorded.  Strange, she was certain she felt a calming vibe from the droid when she touched it.

Glancing at the clock, she saw that there was less than a fifth of an hour left in hour sixteen.  The workday was ending and she hadn’t accomplished anything, again.  She didn’t like it, but she decided to stay after to set up an experiment.  At the very least, she could do that much.

Buckling down, Tosca prepared all the energy reading machines.  She sat and started making notes of what she had observed about the droid before and things that could give some kind of response.  Many of the observations were repeated elsewhere but it never hurt to post things again.  Perhaps a view from a different angle would expose a small detail that ended up being important.

Shi wrote what she could but there wasn’t much.  The droid was unresponsive to any stimuli; electrical, thermal, magical, or otherwise.  Perhaps the correct combination of different energies would do something.  Her emotional state dulled her excitement but it was a new path to follow.  Still she made sure to plan out as much as she could before she lost her thoughts.  Perhaps sometime next week, she could look on the notes again and gain a ground breaking insight.

As she was sketching out her first set of ideas, the lab was nearly empty.  Tosca returned a few glances as the last few coworkers left.  She was usually chatty but today, they knew to leave her alone.

However, one familiar shadow hung over her desk.  With her weak performance today, she was surprised to see it.  Still, it was always nice to see her.

“Tosca,” said a slightly apologetic voice, “You’re still here?”

Tosca turned around and, as expected, saw Adrianne standing near with Chaeri a few rows back looking down, arms crossed, and leaning against a lab table.  She would neverever dream of using their first names during work hours.  However, it was no secret that the three were the best of friends since Tosca could remember.

“We’re going to the Ge’s across the valley.  Wanna come?” Adrianne said eagerly without sounding too corny.

Tosca’s eyes darted between Adrianne and Chaeri noting their expressions.  Adrianne had clearly heard about their “discussion.”  Tosca and Chaeri both loved the Ge’s Noodles and Subs restaurant in the city across the valley.  Adrianne had different tastes.  However, as the Big Sister, it was her job to make peace between the two, again.

Though Tosca had no problems with this obvious attempt to keep the three of them together, she found other problems with the plans, “I’ve been wasting time since hour thirteen,” she turned back to her work station, “I have to get some work done today.”

“Don’t worry about that thing,” Chaeri said flatly from the distance, “It’ll still be there in the morning.”

Tosca flinched at hearing Cheari’s stone voice again so soon.  There was a good chance that she was bribed into the dinner as well.  ‘Ge’s Subs and Pastas’ was so very good.  The original one in Bosstown was even better than the one in Rubin’s Trail.  Flying in Silent Blur was always a dream.  Besides, she was very hungry and Chaeri’s reasoning was unquestionable, this time.  The droid never moved.  It’ll be there when she comes back.

After a few moments thought, Tosca gave the only reply that made sense, “Fine, I’ll go.”

Champions of Battle: The Very Best – Opportunity #033

West Drop, Sunflower Lounge:

While Liana was calling Neely, Jaquan picked through the heavier pieces of the crew’s luggage.  According to Justice, fighters in these tournaments “preferred victory over pride.”  Jaquan didn’t know exactly what this meant.  Perhaps they trained nonstop.  Maybe they just avoided publicity.  Either way, they were probably stronger than the fighters he was used to in the arena.  If Jaquan was going to have a chance against these new fighters, he would have to become stronger.

Jaquan got several long strong chains out of his bags.  They were some of the many weapon modifiers he used with all his weapons.  By combining the different parts, he was usually able to make the perfect weapon for the variety of fights.  Today, the chains had a separate purpose.

After a bit of planning, the luggage was lined up and tied together into a larger package.  He then padded his shoulders, looped his arms into the chains, and carried the heap on his back.

Walking with the pack was a lot harder than he remembered.  It didn’t look at all glorious, but the feeling was quite nostalgic.  He hadn’t done this training since before he was the Circuit Champion.  Since then, he rose to the top and relied on more measurable training tactics.  However, those times were gone.

By choosing this path, he had renounced his championship.  The World Circuit was all he knew for the longest and it was great being on the top.  However, two Holy Talent users had told him this was the best road.  He changed paths with a good amount of assurance but knew the consequences.

There was little chance that he would be welcomed back into the World Championship Circuit.  Those that promoted him would have nothing to do with him.  So now, all he had was his friends and the leftover winnings from his past fights.  However, the weight on his back reminded him of the freedom this path had given him.

He struggled to make it out of the building, while his companions walked easily in front of him.  Jaquan’s efforts made the load exceptionally lighter for the other two.  Justice carried a few bags leaving Liana’s hands free to continue her call.  Quite unfair given that her powered mech suit had a communicator installed.  All she had to do was talk to speak with Neely.

How did I do this so easily?  Jaquan couldn’t help but think to himself as he staggered out of the door.  He knew that he looked silly.  He also knew that the news casters would not know anything about his side of the story.

The media was having too grand a time dragging his name through the mud.  However, that was expected from a group of sensationalists.  It made a bit more sense to him that the stronger fighters were unknown.  At times, Jaquan wished to be a broke and unknown rather than a rich media target.

The news crews seemed to only make money from what people read.  People only read stories that seemed exciting enough to finish reading.  The stories didn’t have to be true, only true enough.

For “authentic stories”; they haunted people going though celebrations, ruining the spirit; and hounded people going through tragedy, never giving them time to heal.  Granted reporters would apologize for incorrect information, but apologies were never as entertaining.  Most of the public only remembered the original report.

Today, stories about former Circuit Champion Jaquan Zu’s “cowardice” gave them ratings.  Knowing Orien Quan, the story will be in the forefront of the news until the next Circuit Championship fight.  Apparently, people wanted to hear it.  It wouldn’t be long before the story would appear again.

By the time Jaquan reached his friends on the street, Liana was finished talking with Neely.  She told him something about the two adventurers staying there for the night.  That was so much like them.  They were best friends and trouble makers long before Jaquan had met them.  Neely and Catlin could take care of themselves.  However, they were still on a side quest when he preferred them to be near.

He and his whole crew knew that Orien Quan would do something like this.  He used the media and the media seemed to enjoy being used.  Jaquan had a counter plan but with the two still looking for their reporter, it seems to have failed.

Just as well.  He still hated reporters.

Sons of Sword: Tales of Glory – Lost and Found #030

Metcalf couldn’t take her eyes off of the factory.  Training-bots kept piling out of the main building forming more and more search parties.  From the small gap between two distant buildings, she focused on them with her monocle hoping to find something that she could use to get an edge.

This test, if it was a test, was far more intense than any she had ever taken.  The training-bots were acting a lot like real people.  The loud alarms were most likely interrupting real lives in the town but they were Commoners.  Having little to no abilities and being of the lowest class, they were probably used to interruptions by now.

She didn’t know how well the training-bots were programmed to fight.  She didn’t want to learn either.  She did know that they were all hunting for her.  Any sign of her presence would rally a constant stream of bots to her general area.  Consequently, hostility or disturbances were out of the question.

Metcalf had no intention of making things more difficult for herself or Master Fu.  She was still planning on a smooth extraction.  Things were hard enough, no need to add a high speed chase.  It was time to avoid capture but it was harder to do with her present surroundings.

The text book’s method to evade capture was simple.  Haruna and the gang had drilled her quite a bit over the last few months.  All she had to do was outrun her pursuers then blend in or hide within her surroundings.  Over time, they would lose her trail and move on.  If they didn’t put a tracking device on her she could disappear without a trace.  Easy, not that pure knowledge would help her now.

In practice, it was quite difficult especially here.  The training-bots were filing out into the streets and even more of them filled the skies.  Granted, she had outrun them and they had no idea where she was.  But she did spy heat sensing scopes on their blasters.  Also the bots didn’t seem to be losing interest; at all.

She caught herself giving up before the chase even begun and shook herself out of that mindset.  This was no time to be frozen in fear.  She had to take control of herself, will herself away from the wall, and move on.  She did not want to end up fitting inside a small bloody box like that one guy.  She needed a plan to get out of the area.

Blending in was not at all reasonable.  She was alone in the factory district at a crazy hour of the morning; the only warm body to track.  She would be hard pressed to convince them that she was taking a morning jog while armed to the teeth and in a stealth suit.

A stealth suit!

Metcalf resisted face-palming.  She wore a major part of the solution.  The time she could have spent using her gear was wasted on worrying about her problem.

The indigo cloth suit she wore was state of the art technology.  It could change to any color that she set with a simple command.  On its highest setting, it could cloak her completely for short periods of time.  It also could capture her heat to resist detection from heat seeing sensors.  She would waste no more time.  She had to get safely away from here.

Metcalf quickly changed the suit to the exact color of the concrete pavement a dull tan/grey mixture.  The cloaking system only lasted a short while and drained the suit causing a shutdown and recharge period.  The natural shadows should blend her in and keep her hidden from the flying patrols for now.

Activating the heat system was simple enough as well.  Her gear came equipped with goggles and a breathing mask.  The material became freezing cold as the system activated.  Master Fu told her about that minor effect of the technology.  She didn’t know exactly what she meant until now.  Every part of the suit was cold.

Master Fu!  She suddenly remembered that she was not in this exercise alone.  Perhaps that was another major part of the test.  Pressing her now almost invisible body to a wall, she made a quick call to Master Fu.  The suit mimicked the color and patterns on the wall.  Only her visor maintained a clear image of her eyes.

“Master,” she started, placing her finger to her ear, “We need a place to meet.”

“’bout time,” Insula muttered as she answered the call.  “I just so happen to have a place set,” she said much louder, “A Wang’s Convenience store.  I’ll patch the location to your visor.  I’ll get some snacks and leave the side door unlocked.  Good luck hide-and-sneaking.”

“Thanks…  I think,” Metcalf finished.  She ended the call and started for the street.
