Champions of Battle: AD7 – Awakening #22

Somewhere on the Outskirts of Bosstown

AD7, Royal, and Oyintsa walk into the woods beyond Bosstown.  The depressing city ruins ended a few decameters back.  Nature had completely taken over these parts.  Tall grass and weeds flourished.  The occasional tree shot out of the ground shading the entire area.  Not even the roads were evident here.

As they fought through the weeds to gain ground, they walked over unnatural looking hills from time to time.  They were more like aged piles of rubble.  Each smelled of rust, rotting wood, and wild mushrooms.  There was quite a bit of red gravel underneath them as well; and roofing tiles all around them.

How could my beautiful city be overcome by nature so quickly?  AD7 tried to riddle it out; then face-palmed as she remembered again.  It’s been fifty years!  AD7 wanted to read about the details of her city’s decay but Royal had taken her handheld back a while ago.

Besides, Royal and Oyintsa seemed to be getting more aware of their surroundings.  They were cautious on how and where they stepped.  They moved quickly and quietly.  They made sure they gave every sound attention and could identify them.  With that, AD7 realized they were in the wild now.  There were many places for the wildlife to hide.

AD7 tried to do what they did.  However, it didn’t help that they were each holding five fragrant sandwiches designed to attract meat eaters.  She looked to the sky.  Through the weeds, several birds flew overhead.  The birds seemed uninterested but birds could change their minds at any time.

“Tracks,” Oyintsa stopped as he spoke.

AD7 stopped as well realizing that she was about to run into Royal.  She looked at the tracks.  There were several.  They were everywhere.  Each identical in shape, they looked like deformed hands, with claws.  Among the prominent large tracks were much smaller tracks.

“Ratcoons?” Royal asked.

“Ratcoons… with cubs,” he said the last words with a bit of enthusiasm.  Ratcoons were much like rats; only much larger, intelligent, and aggressive.  Unlike rats, they actually hunted live food as well as scavenged.  As with most animals, adults with cubs to feed and protect were much more dangerous.

Both Oyintsa and Royal shoved things into AD7’s hands.  Suddenly, AD7 found herself holding all of the sandwiches.

“Time to go,” Oyintsa said as he produces a long throwing blade from under his cape.  He throws it in the direction they were walking.  The blade gains power and speed as it mows down to weeds creating a path for them.  After about a meter into the weeds, it returns to Oyintsa.  At that, the three of them run down the path to get as far away as they can from the den.

AD7 didn’t know if they were in immediate danger.  Still, she knew when to follow the leader and did her best to keep up.  Warriors don’t run without good reason.

About halfway through the path he created, Oyintsa turns, points, and shouts, “Left!”  There was a short powerful gun in his hand.  He pointed it to the left and fired behind Royal who kept running passed him.  The sound was deafening.

After being in stasis for so long, AD7 was getting tired quickly.  She found new strength when Oyintsa yelled and even more energy when the beast screamed just to the left of her and stood.  It looked like an enormous brown rat more than four decimeters tall.  Black patches covered its eyes and large white stripes traced down its body.  She saw a fresh wound just beginning to bleed on its left front leg.

AD7 looks at Oyintsa.  He has already drawn another gun.  He flexes and roars.  Suddenly, his cloak expands and turns metallic.  It’s not long before he’s wearing thickly plated spiked armor still accented with his clan’s crest on the back.  His guns have gotten larger as well.  He fires them and reloads repeatedly as he charges the beast gaining all its attention.

Only after it starts attacking Oyintsa does Royal step in.  She pulls out two rather large swords from behind her cape.  AD7 immediately thought to herself.  Where exactly did those come from?  Did she have them this whole time?

There was no sign of them existing before now.  At the restaurant, Royal even sat on them with no sign of discomfort.  No matter if they truly came from nowhere, one of them spouted flames while the other was engulfed in frost flakes.

A Hanja on Royal’s leg glowed red then she leaps into action.  The impressive jump took her over the weeds and directly behind the beast.  As she landed, she turned and slashing downward with both swords.

Her cuts were clean and damaging.  Oyintsa’s attacks were annoying and painful.  But the ratcoon was much larger than them and very fast.  It was going to be a hard battle.

Champions of Battle: AD7 – Awakening #21

The observation apartments were in a separated division of the research labs.  There were many unknowns in research.  It was a precaution on the off chance that conscious subjects would control or react to devices being researched in the lab.  With the valuable items in the lab, it never hurt to be as safe as possible.

Several types of protective barriers blocked the way into the apartments.  With their high rank, Doctors Yu and Wu were able to walk through most of the check points unhindered.  They were stopped only twice.  Even they could be imitated or bugged by a crafty thief or saboteur.

The apartments were relatively nice; filled with soft things and many means of entertainment.  They were quite comfortable and themed in a calming light blue color.  From time to time, the laboratory staff spent time in them reading or resting on their breaks.  Today though, they were off limits.  A guest considered potentially hazardous was staying there.

The doctors approached the apartment door.  It slid to the right, opening the way for them.  Dr. Yu couldn’t help but stare for a while at the embodiment of her inspiration and her warning, AD7.

Their guest was examining a toaster though it seemed as though she had no interest in making toast.  She put her head to it as though she was thinking with it.  Then she put her ear to it and listened to it as though it had said something to say.  Looking confused, she simply set it back down.

She looked almost like a crisho female, though quite a bit taller and thinker all around though still quite fit.  Instead of the lizard-like crisho flesh, metallic patches of different colors, sizes, and shapes covered her.  Each patch held a powerful Hanja of matching size.  Both Adrianne and Chaeri knew what most of them did.  There were a few of them that were old or obscure enough to escape even their memory.

She was found with no clothing but in the interest of modesty, the lab crew dressed her with a simple tunic and slacks.  Even with the tunic, the two ladies could tell that her wings were replaced with sleek jet packs.

Their guest turned to regard them.  Her eyes were solid white dimly-lit lights.  She had a simple slit of a mouth that, dispite the metal face opened and closed as normal.  Inside of the slit, something that resembled a speaker took the place of her throat.  What passed for her hair was instead hair thin bits of wire.  It stayed in place but from time to time a single strand would move on its own.

Adrianne stared for a while awestruck while AD7 looked back at her.  After a time, she decided to speak, “Greetings AD7.  I am Dr. Yu head of this facility.”

Their guest looked back and smiled.  Her logical systems computed her situation in a split second.  Yu says Eight-Seven is Master.  Eight-Seven is not Master.  Yu knows neither Eight-Seven nor Master.  Yu is leader of this facility.  Facility has trapped Eight-Seven thinking she is Master.  Facility has high potential to be enemy of Eight-Seven and Master; reevaluate later.  Eight-Seven must escape facility to fully obey Master’s commands.  If Eight-Seven is to succeed in escape procedure, should gain trust of Yu.  Eight-Seven will impersonate Master and gain Yu’s trust.  “Hello Dr. Yu,” she spoke imitating AD7’s voice perfectly, “Your facility is remarkable.”

The wait was surprisingly brief.  Ge’s Noodles and Subs knew how to treat their high rollers.  Oyintsa was sure to thank them with a generous tip, with a little extra for the cook.  He grabbed the bags and they were out the door.

The trip out of Bosstown was a lot quicker than the trip to the restaurant.  For one, Oyintsa and Royal used a directional system to know exactly where to go.  They also had purpose enough to get there quickly.

Even though she held no equipment or bags, AD7 lagged behind.  The thoughts of her closest companion stuck deep in her mind.  The war was finished but Eighty-Seven would not consider that possible until AD7 told her directly.  So, as far as Eighty-Seven was concerned, she was deep behind enemy lines.  AD7 could only guess what Eighty-Seven would do to get out.

Rubin’s Trail: Main Research Lab

Adrianne was still a little shaken by the Gankers’ attack.  They were probably bandits trying their luck; testing the strength of Rubin’s Trail’s defense.  She couldn’t begin to guess where they came from but they were very well funded.  Cloaking devices and hover-hunters were not easy to come by.

However, those thoughts were for another day.  She was back in her element now.  Sitting in her laboratory office, she listened as best she could to Chaeri’s reports on AD7’s treatment and responses.  The researchers had waited as long as they could for Dr. Yu to return.  After too long a time they had to take some actions.  She wanted to know as much as she could about this mechanical chisho before they met.

Chaeri explained that after AD7 woke up, she had shown near crisho responses to almost all stimuli.  She was thus deemed near crisho and moved from the research facility to one of the observation apartments in the lab.  It would be rude to treat a crisho in any other way, even an enemy.  A semi-prison, there was no way out of those apartments.  An electromagnetic field and other precautions prevented any contact with the outside world.

AD7 didn’t seem to need any sustenance, possibly the result of her mechanical state.  She also seemed to have an involved interest in the mechanical devices as she touched and stared at them often.  That was all they decided to do without Dr. Yu’s approval.

Dr. Yu was interested in everything AD7 did.  It was her childhood dream to meet such an iconic former Champion.  She had given pause to the greatest nations in the area.  Her Mech Fortress was strong enough to cause them to negotiate peace, combine their forces, and even ask for worldwide aid from Champions.

She started as a simple builder who wanted to defend a city.  Now she sits in their lab.  What was she now, a prisoner, a project, an example, a secret weapon?  All that would depend on her reaction to questioning.

Adrianne stood at her desk, “I would like to meet her,” an understatement.  She almost bolted out of the room with excitement before she remembered her status.

Chaeri stood and bowed trying to ignore her leader’s excitement, “I will take you to her.”
