Champions of Battle: The Very Best – Opportunity #034

Finishing the quick conversation with Neely, Liana turned her whole attention to Jaquan.  She watched as he struggled with the oversized bundle on his shoulders.  Every bit of motion challenged all of his strength and focus.  She had barely seen him take five tiny steps into the light.  Already, he was sweating.  It would be a wonder if he made it to the street.

The whole dilemma brought back memories of the time before he was a household name.  Just as before, she knew better than to even offer any help.  He wanted and needed to earn this victory for himself.  All she could do was offer advice.

After giving the update on Neely and Catlin she said as much as she could in offering help, “You should slow down a bit.  You won’t gain anything if you hurt yourself.”  In all honesty, she could carry the load herself.  Little would trouble her other than balance.  Her advanced Mech suit ridiculously increased her strength, was made of plated compressed metal, and flew.

After a few minutes Jaquan miraculously reached the curb.  He stood as strong as he could pretending not to be completely exhausted.  He wasn’t convincing.  “I’m… fine,” he heaved breath as he spoke.  Setting “the pack” down was more of a challenge than picking it up.  He fell backwards in the attempt.  Getting back up, he rubbed his shoulder, “Might need a heal later though.”

“I gotchu,” Justice offered with no hesitation.

Liana was surprised at the speed of his comment.  Even more so when she remembered that Justice did not use the healing talents; Jaquan did.  Liana decided against commenting on the issue.  Instead, she made a note of it in her suit’s computer.  A few seconds later, she called for the cab to take them to the caravan.  They’d be leaving the city soon

Bome Castle Hospital:

Finally, he had the release forms.  He grabbed a pen immediately.  He was standing and walking on his own power quite easily for the last ten minutes.  The staff should have had the papers waiting for him at the front desk.  He had more important things to do than waste precious time.  Perhaps if he did a subtle story on this hospital’s efficiency they would make changes.

His rushed signature looked more like a looping lasso than a name, but whatever.  They all knew who he was.  He didn’t stop to chat on his way out either.  There was too much for Ace Reporter Duard Ban to do.

The staff had kept him there for almost an entre day.  Granted he needed a carrier droid to get there.  Still their service was the worst he had received in a while.

Cracked ribs, crushed wing joints, and cracked shoulder blades.  Bome Castle’s hospital had completely healed it all with a day’s rest.  Still, South Coast could do the same in an hour or so.  Technology of the day was amazing for those that could afford the treatment.

Duard had the gold.  Now, if only Bome Castle could improve their methods and efficiency a bit.  It made better sense if all healing facilities were up to about the same level.  But, what could he expect from these developing kingdoms.

More importantly, he was now free of the hospital.  Duard had to get back on the trail of that ruffian that which landed him in there in the first place.  Never had he experienced such disrespect.

A scowl enveloped his face at the very thought of the man.  That son of a rat step on me!  I’ll drag his name through catfish infested water!  He could and he would, with little trouble.  Ban had led to the demise of more important people than Jaquan Zu.

Catlin and Neely dashed through the back alleys of West Drop for a sign; any possible signs of struggles.  Catlin needed to search thoroughly but she knew they were running out of time.  If the city’s citizens were to be believed, Brisa was seen running with a young lady down these very alleys a few hours ago.

When there were fewer people around, Catlin searched more intently.  She knew the gankers attacked quickly and efficiently.  They would attack where they would not be seen, kill the target, and take what they wanted.  Catlin hoped that Brisa found a way to escape the trap and get away, but with Brisa’s perception the way it was, chances were slim.

Though Neely’s movements were aided by his new mech suit, Catlin often left him behind as they frantically searched each and every alleyway.  Catlin hoped to find Brisa whole and alive.  Soon, every bend became a dramatic event.  With every empty or otherwise used alleyway, Catlin praised that Brisa wasn’t found harmed yet was frustration that Brisa wasn’t found at all.

The pair had come to what seemed like another dead end.  They had searched the area’s set of back alleys with no trace of Brisa yet.  They were very near a populated area, a shopping complex.  There, they had turned to an alley they had barely seen with Catlin’s rushed pace.

About half an hour ago, they had gained the attention of a guard though he lagged far behind them both.  He was strangely unconvinced that Brisa had been taken this way even though every townsfolk up to this point had said otherwise.  They searched through the alley for evidence but found none of Brisa.

After a few minutes, the guard jogged around the corner.  They learned his name was Sasuke Si, a new recruit that apparently has not finished his endurance training.  Bent over and out of breath he barely managed to speak, “I think… we should go… to head… quarters… get more men… looking.”

At this the pair stared at each other and then at him, in awe.  They were astonished as his actions showed utter incompetence.  In the alley, there were blood stains, sword slashed walls, and many other signs of numerous struggles.  This may not have been where Brisa was lead, but it definitely was worth looking into.

Catlin’s eyes turned flame red though she asked calmly, “What do we have to look for?”

At almost the same time, Neely spoke up, “I think you should call this in.”

Taking in the sight of the bloody alleyway, Sasuke staggered back and had to agree.  He promptly left the alley and reached for his handheld.

Looking at the guard walk away, Catlin knew he would be of no help.  She searched deeper into the alley and found a locked door that she knew had to lead somewhere.  Waving Neely to her area, she asked, “Do you think this is the place?”

“This has to be the place,” he responded, “The rest stop guy clearly said there was a singular group of gankers.”  He reasoned further, “The townsfolk also said that the same lady had brought other people in this way.”

“And this is where they went,” Catlin reasoned.

Neely’s handheld buzzes.  He answers and finds Liana on the other end.  Apparently he and Catlin had lost track of time because it was nearing hour seventeen.  Jaquan wanted to leave for Bear Gate immediately.

Neely understood his rush, Jaquan had taken a big risk setting aside his pride for this opportunity.  However, looking at Catlin’s face Neely knew that she wanted to stay in West Drop and find Brisa.  “I’m sorry,” he said, “Could you go on without us?  We’ll catch up to you guys soon.”

“Alright, see you th…,” were Liana’s words as her image faded from his handheld.

Shinsaku and Ione grabbed their handhelds and rushed to the pile of armor.  They knew better than to fiddle with the droids.  Sure they could check the alley but they’d completely give away their position.  Any competent guard would check for things like that.

Ione looked at the pile franticly.  There was no way the team could sort through all this in the next two minutes and find the best items.  “What do we do,” the sound of hurriedness escaped her voice.  Her strong instinct was to grab random items and run for it.  She looked at Phillip and Taigi.  They were supposed to be done by now!

Time was against them.  Ione knew the team would be in big trouble if they were caught.  They had a plan for escape.  They also planned to catch all the targets and for all targets to be stuck in rejuvenation centers for the next few weeks.  Having one target escape was trouble.  Now, two slayers and possibly a horde of guards were on their trail.  Everything was falling appart!

Taigi looked at Ione’s overly concerned posture, “We relax,” she instructed rolling her eyes.  It seemed Ione’s first reaction was always to worry, often hindering their progress.

Shinsaku nodded in agreement, “Get ready to move.”  He was the rock staying calm even though he was most exposed in all this.  It was what made him the best fighter of the group.  He traded glances between Taigi and Phillip.  They’ve had plenty of time to do their job, “Alright, what are we taking?

After gathering the selected armor, RedBatty followed the plan and split into three teams.  To Taigi’s dismay, she was stuck with Ione who needed to change clothes.  Therefore she had to linger in a soon to be compromised area while listening to Ione whine as she fumbled around with her armor and helmet.  Shinsaku and Phillip had long since left the building by then.  It was good since it reduced suspicion.

Unfortunately, in her rush Ione forgot to deactivate the hover droid tracking their latest target.

A strange twist in the World Circuit today as Jaquan Zu, World Circuit title holder for several years, has decided to leave the World Circuit instead of facing his longtime rival Orien Quan.

Sources say that Zu had become increasingly bitter towards Quan saying that Quan had used underhanded tactics during their most recent bout.  Zu has since not been available for comment.

However, Quan had this to say, “I’m surprised that he’d disappear like that.  I could tell he was losing nerve as the fight got closer.  I never thought he’d quit.”  Quan went on to say that he’d, “lost all respect Zu.  I used to look up to him.  Fighting him told me that I was nearing the top.  But if he [is] scared, he [is] scared.”

The Championship fight will continue only a little later than originally scheduled.  Instead of fighting Zu, Quan will battle against Madrid Li, the third in line for the World Circuit Title.  We can only wait to see how she will respond to this opportunity.

Jaquan sat in his chair getting angrier and angrier as he watched the news feed.  This was the reason he hated reporters.  No matter what really happened, the reporters would run with a story and shout their message until enough people agreed with them.  By the time the whole truth came out.  The public already had an opinion washed into their brains.

He resists throwing his handheld down in anger.  Deciding instead to slap the holographic image it was presenting.  His handheld got the message to shut off as Jaquan stood from his seat.

Looking around the resting area, he spotted his comrades and the clock.  It was almost hour seventeen.  “Liana,” he said, “Call Neely.  Ask him where he’s at.  It’s time to go.”
