Champions of Battle: The Very Best – Opportunity #001

Bome Castle Arena:

The dome was huge.  The spectator seating was completely dark.  Every now and then, specially designed spotlights would move to an area revealing a packed arena and a sponsor’s logo.  Spectators didn’t care about the light; their focus was on the set of structures and the two competitors fighting for the global championship.

The well lit area was also the focus of all attention.  A small maze of one story buildings, stairs, and sand served as a fighting stage for the competitors.  Deafening cheers and camera flashes erupted whenever it seemed like one of the fighters had an upper hand.

The challenger, Generosa E, was much more visible.  In her brown armored mechanical rocket suit, she hovered in the air firing laser blasts to the ground.  She could only stay in the air for brief periods; she was running out of fuel.  The champion ducked and ran between the structures.  He had a very quick dash.  It was faster than she could aim.

Landing on top of one of the structures, her tracking system spotted a brief hint of motion behind her.  She quickly spun and fired a series of blaster bolts following him as he tried to run out of sight.  She got him!  The crowd roared as he tripped and managed to jump off the building and out of her range.  They roared again when he hit the ground.

Strolling to the edge she knew that this fight was all but over.  She had wasting a lot of energy.  She knew she had played into his hands most of the fight but he got careless.  And now, she had him.  She had hit him with a paralyzing bolt.  He would not be able to move far.

Approaching the edge, she prepared a small rocket to make sure that he wouldn’t be running for a while.  She wanted everyone to know that she was the new champion.  It would make a good picture for the newspaper.  Looking over the edge she saw, nothing.

He was gone.

Jaquan Zu, the global champion, knew she was getting frustrated.  He had planned and practiced this strategy with his team.  He talked to the news reporters about an easy win but she was no push over.  Her rockets and debilitating blaster shots were much better than his fist weapons.  Plate shields with knuckle blades and stabbing spikes were no match for long range weapons.  His weapons were enchanted, but it made little difference here.  He could only hope to dodge as long as she was flying.

The Hanja character on his chest was still glowing so he cast another heal on his leg.  His rage techniques allowed him to get out of most stuns temporarily but it would definitely sting for a while.  He escaped just in time.

She was grounded, distracted, and confused giving him the time he needed.  It was time to strike.  Dashing at her, he activated an armor piercing enchant and stabbed through her jet pack as she was turning around.  She screamed in frustration and pain as she fell to where she thought he landed.  The challenger landed on her back with a thud, leaving a fresh blood stain in the sand.  The crowd was going crazy.

He jumped down to the challenger as she was getting up.  Out of her armor she produced two short poles one with a moon like blade attached.  She quickly connected the two and dropped into a fighting stance, signaling that the fight was not over.

Being champion for the longest time, Jaquan knew what to do.  He used the Duelist Talent Set so he could out fight her.  He just had to stay close.  Stepping in, he continued to close the distance keeping her from getting away. She knew she was in trouble but was too flustered to do anything about it.

She swung her blade at him.  He caught and parried it easily with his shield.  It fell from her hand.  She tried to aim her arm blaster.  He deflected her arm wide.  Now that she was unbalanced, he quickly found the vital points in her armor.  He punched and stabbed through her armor until she was unable to get back up.

The horns sounded signaling the end of the fight.  The healers and medics came quickly to restore the Generosa.  Though her body will be whole before the end of the day, her armor will take some time to repair.

Then a voice called over the speakers.  “The winner and reigning champion, Jaquan Zu!”  They overly emphasized the name the way that announcers like to do.  Jaquan’s victory music blasts over the speakers.  He raises his hands in victory as he limps slightly towards the exit.  Casting another heal on his leg he is able to walk a lot easier.  He leaves the arena with his fighting team, once again as champion.

Opportunity #2

Champions of Battle: AD7 – Awakening #2

“I need a better job,” Cyd Chang says as he looks at the schedule frustrated. Business was nowhere near what it was ten years ago. That was no excuse to schedule only one dependable person for the shift.  Who does that?

Cyd had been educated at the finest schools; learned the finer points of the most powerful Talent Sets. For what, to have a lame job in a freezer reviving fail adventures? There had to be something better. Seven years asking for reassignments or promotions: nothing, only skeleton shifts, training people that don’t care enough about work to show up. How would they like it when they took him for granted and he wasn’t there?

“Bing,” the high chime was unmistakable. He’d heard it many times before, thankfully, not often today. Then again the day just started. He set the work schedule back into place promising to find another job soon. He had no idea how to find this job but it never hurt to hope.

As always, the high chime meant that someone was coming into the center to revive someone. He had to abandon the back office to tend to them. That meant there was no one to work the machines reconstructing the more damaged adventurers.

How would they expect to keep this place running if there was no one here? He walked to the front desk. An empty doorway separated the back from the front. He tried to keep his frustration in check as he walked out. It took a lot of strength stop at the counter and not to keep walking out the door.

“Bosstown Rejuvenation Center. How can I help you?” The customer’s fist balled tightly in anger. Thankfully, she calmed down quickly. Her companions each held a hand under their cloaks. He had to admit that the words came out a little more harsh than he wanted them to. Hopefully, they won’t kill him. On a day like today, there would be no one there to rejuvenate him.

“We would like to see if you have a very special builder. Her name is Aa Dee Seven.” There were four of them. They looked fairly organized and very strong, much stronger than the local hooligans. He only saw one face.  A beautiful lady with long hair.  The others wore matching black hooded cloaks. They were obviously in a clan but not one from around here. The leader stood just beyond the desk, flanked by two male companions. The unmasked lady companion stood further back and to the left of them.

AD7? Why would someone look for anyone so notorious here? Her technical monstrosities were defeated ten years ago. When they found her, she was pretty much all machine too. Her remains were shipped to a kingdom southwest of her Mech Fortress. Why would they look here? It’s in the wrong direction.

“Aa Dee Seven? Why would you look for her here? Bounty hunters hunted all of her monstrosities long ago. Only people here these days are bleeding hearts and wishful.. .. thinkers..” He almost stuttered over his words as the leader’s female companion sprung into action. She was so fast that before he could react, she had thrown a large bag onto the counter. It landed with a heavy sound promising to dent the counter. As it landed, gold coins spilled his direction. He stared at the bag as a world full of possibilities opened for him, if he helped them.

“We have a hunch,” the leader shrugged calmly as she began again, “but we’re not sure how to start looking. We know that it’s a breach of protocol but,” she paused gaining his attention. He managed to look away from the bag after awhile. She was leaning slightly over the counter her glowing electric blue eyes made her face just barely visible. She was looking through his eyes as though she could see into his soul. Her face, colder than the room, told him everything he needed to know about his situation. “Could you help us search?”

Though her lady companion’s arms were now relaxed, her two male companions were still ready. Hands beneath their cloaks, he knew that no matter how she phrased her words, it was not a question. “Sure. I would love to help you search for her.”

“Good!” she said gaining a sudden friendly tone. Her changing mood was slightly disturbing. It was very comforting that her male companions had relaxed their arms though. The bag of gold appeared in her hand as she stepped away from the counter. He didn’t see when she picked it up but it didn’t really matter now. “We’ll hold onto this until we’re done. Is that ok?”

Of course, not! “Sure. It will make it easier for me to work the controls,” he said as he placed the few spilled coins into his pockets.

Awakening #1 – Awakening #3

Champions of Battle: AD7 – Awakening #1

Team GarDNAnge1 wandered the streets of Bosstown looking for the rejuvenation chamber.  The symbol of Sanity, a golden Apple leaf pointed up with a black sword pointed down, was proudly displayed on their pristine black cloaks promising doom to anyone that would think of disturbing them.  Warriors from Sanity were among the best in the world.  At this point, they would prefer not to be disturbed.  Hopefully, the wildlife would cooperate.

From what was left of the varied houses they could tell that this city was once prosperous like so many others.  Now there was little to distinguish it from the wild lands.  Remnants of a city remained.  There was an upturned stair case here, a broken brick chimney there.  Through the towering weeds, they could tell where the roads used to be.  They walked down them towards what looked like a more populated area.

Even in the populated areas, the city was all but abandoned.  The only people around had their own business to attend.  It seemed like the locals wanted to restore the city to a former glory.  The locals tried to get their attention.  Normally Sanity warriors, especially the Pure Order Set stopped to help the less fortunate.  This time, their mission was far more important.

Tirzah Hang, paused as she took in the dark stone building.  They had never needed to go these lengths before but they knew all about changing times.  The trails were approaching and the leaders of Sanity decided to participate again.  Pure Order and Pure Wealth have usually done well but this time; a vital piece of their clan was missing.  The oldest and greatest warrior clans came here for help.

Her three companions paused beside her; taking in their leader’s reflection and reluctance.  They shared her doubts, but history had been recorded and replayed for all to see.  The events were studied and used as text for other builders to follow.  Even after fifty years, builders still envied her skill.  If their information was correct the builder of legend was inside.

“Are you sure we want to do this love,” Oyintsa Yuan, her second in command said.  His hand sought the safety of his cloak and the grip of his combat shotgun.  They were easily projected to be much stronger than any known enemy in this city.  However, the Prevention Talent user knew to be ready anyway.  “There has to be others in Sanity that can help.”

“We’ve not come this far to turn back now,” she replied.  Tirzah slowly started walking again.  The others followed suit.  Approaching the building, it seemed much taller now and strangely clean.  It had to be the only well kept building in the city.  Even in a city like this, the Rejuvenation Center’s standards were kept.

“These places creep me out,” Royal Qiu said as they climbed the dirty debris filled stairs.  Thankfully, the wind only blew slightly today, just enough to catch the tail of her cape and waist long red hair.

“What could possibly be the problem,” Hachiro Tai said as he turned full circle climbing the stairs with them.  “We’ve all been to places like this before.”

“Coming out, yes.  But going in?”  Royal help back a shudder.  Having been in the rejuvenation chamber several times, she preferred not to be reminded of the discomfort.  For the first few days after rejuvenation, muscles never seemed to work right.  Limbs would fall asleep at random.  She always wondered why but preferred not to be told.

They entered the building and were hit with the sudden chill.  The receptionist was equally cold.  “Bosstown Rejuvenation Center.  How can I help you?”  His words were polite, but his tone told her to go away.

Tirzah tried not to get upset.  This man had probably done his job long enough not to care who he was talking to anymore.  Besides, if she hurt him, it would take a lot of convincing the next time she needed to be rejuvenated.  “We would like to see if you have a very special builder.  Her name is Aa Dee Seven.”
