Champions of Battle: The Very Best – Opportunity #22

On its final approach to West Drop, the shuttle spins as it lands.  This slow and impressive looking maneuver signaled the passengers to finish their exiting preparations.  It would soon be time to get off of the shuttle.  The Trans World Shuttle Corporation had an unforgiving time table.  If passengers lingered, they would be trapped on the shuttle as it leaves again.  If a passenger missed a shuttle, they would have to wait for the next one.  Also, anything passengers left behind would most likely never be seen again.

With its box-shape, it was hard to distinguish the back of the shuttle from the front.  Only the many levels of docking bay doors gave it away.  In the pit, powerful guards and dock workers waited for the precious goods that made the town livable.  The city also had goods to send.  Even a city like West Drop needed commerce.

The landing gear touched the enormous docking pit with surprising silence.  However, the landing gear hissed loudly as the air pressure escaped the brakes.  Traded goods were moved around underground in the docking pit while the passengers exited from the right side of the shuttle.

The Trans World Shuttle Corporation has always been a trading company at heart.  However, the company couldn’t ignore the profit of shipping travelers as well; guaranteed gold for each traveler and the additional gold they may spend on amenities.  They may even be willing to pay more for some of the shipped goods than the original buyers, more profit.

The BigBad Crew exits the shuttle with Justice leading them.  Jaquan pauses briefly as he sees the headlines of the latest news feed.  It was a picture of Orien Quan with a disappointed look on his face.  The caption read: “A fighter is supposed to have more respect than that.”

This didn’t surprise Jaquan at all.  Quan was always pulling media stunts like this.  That, and Jaquan opened the door for these events.  That didn’t mean that he had to like it.  Still, he was curious about what they had to say.  He pressed a few buttons on his handheld.  In doing so, he downloaded and paid for the story.  In a few seconds it would be saved on his handheld to read later.

A few minutes later, Brisa disembarks the shuttle.  She had only one small bag of luggage; the trip was completely unexpected for her.  She only wished there were shops and hotels to provide what she needed in town.

She wore her combat gear perfectly fitting the look of a fierce warrior.  She did her best to walk the way Catlin had demonstrated earlier.  With all the powerful enchants increasing her strength, balance, and a host of many other things, it was quite easy.

Leaving the shuttle behind, she looked around for any sign of trouble before she continued to the port.  There appeared to be none, but she needed to be safe.  She was in a new place, a dangerous place.  She needed to keep her wits for a good while longer.  She checked her handheld for local restaurants; she was getting hungry and was going to be here a while.

The call to Mr. Meng in South Coast didn’t go at all the way she wanted.  There were delays for all the other stories Champion’s Chronical was following.  No one else was able to make it to West Drop or Bear Gate.  Since she was still the only one that had access to BigBad, Meng needed her to tail them just a while longer.

She didn’t have the tools to track them.  Of course, she didn’t need to track them.  She knew where they were going.  They told her when they were going; they wanted her to follow them.  She just had to be ready to leave with the tournament party at hour seventeen.  Hopefully, they would have an escort of some kind.  One or more people with them would make her feel much better.  She couldn’t trust them.

Exiting the shuttle port Brisa was approached by a frantic looking woman.  With pain and fear in her eyes, the lady pulled at Brisa’s glove.  “Help us,” she said, “They’re going to kill them!  I need your help please!”

Brisa sat there for a few moments, paralyzed by fear.  Jaquan and his crew took their seats around the table.  None of them said a word.  Jaquan made it a point to sit just to the left of Brisa.  They waited in silence giving Brisa time to think.  Within a few minutes the servers brought food serving Brisa first.

Still, it took a little time for the truth to sink in: Catlin’s friends were the BigBad Crew.  Brisa thought back to their earlier conversations.  Each time Catlin giggled was a reaction to knowing this secret.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”  Brisa was still wearing the mask.  There was thin black cloth covering her eyes along with a painting of a mantis designed to hide were she was looking.  However, it was quite obvious that she was talking to Catlin.

“The first time we met, wasn’t under the best of circumstances,” was Catlin’s calm response.

“What do you mean?  You knocked on my cabin door.”

Neely was sitting to the right of Catlin.  He mumbled something to her.  Catlin whispered a barely loud enough for Brisa to hear, “I dropped it a few minutes ago.  We have to wait for her.”

After a time, she gathered her wits just enough to look them all in the eyes.  Almost all the BigBad Crew was there: Jaquan, Neely, and Liana still in her mech suit.  Even Justice was there.  Brisa wasn’t sure if he was an official member of the crew.  However, he had been with them since the championship victory party.  The only one missing was…

OH NO!

Catlin sat across the table from Brisa with a bored look.  Brisa had missed it all this time.  Catlin’s eyes were different than before.  Not red in black, not glowing, or spouting black flame, they were normal.  Still, there was no mistaking it.  Catlin had attacked her at the shuttle port.  The one she had the most reason to fear had just become her close friend in the last few hours.

Brisa’s thoughts of safety were nothing but illusionary smoke.  Catlin had tracked her down easily.  Within the first few minutes of the flight Catlin was knocking on her door.  Like a fool she opened the door embracing the enemy with open arms.

How did Catlin disguise herself so well?  She must have used something, perhaps an enchantment to hide herself.  She was never malicious and could have attacked at any time.  Instead, they had what Brisa thought was the most wonderful time.  Still Catlin used a trick to get close to her.  If she was truly repentant, she would have apologized at the beginning.

“I apologize for my reaction to you earlier,” Catlin said, “I thought for sure you were a spy.  I was looking for a good time to tell you but it never came.”

“We all apologize for our actions before,” Jaquan spoke up, “but now, let’s eat.”

Brisa was so full of conflicting emotions: ultimate deception by an enemy that had become a best friend; a lady that had given her so much to prove that she wasn’t what she had to be?  Brisa said as she got up from the table, “I’m sorry.  I can’t do this.”  She walked away from the table, back towards her cabin.  She half expected to be pulled back to the table and forced to sit.  Since she was not she assumed she was free to go.  Under the mask a tear left her eye.

Catlin stood almost grabbing at Brisa with her Kin-Po Talents but thought against it.  Instead she called, “We’re planning to leave for Bear Gate at hour seventeen.”

Brisa paused at the information then kept walking.  She was welcomed to join them but unsure if she wanted to.

“So,” Liana said, her mask altering her voice to that of a machine’s, “What do we do now?”

Jaquan simply answered, “We eat.”

Now, Brisa was absolutely certain that she had met this young lady before.  As much as she tried, she failed to place where she had seen Catlin’s face.  It was maddening.  Wherever it was, it must have been at a party or another social event.  Catlin was so fun to be around.

They went through the shuttle’s equipment shop looking for things Brisa could wear.  To Brisa, all of the items looked dangerous or scary but Catlin looked completely comfortable around them.  Catlin even looked a little disappointed at the selection.  She was an interesting lady, funny, possibly dangerous, and familiar with places like West Drop.

“Why are you going to West Drop,” Brisa asked.  She realized she had never thought to ask this before.  Being a reporter, it was odd that she was so off balance.  She could have the first mission jitters, even though it was a short mission.

“A friend of mine has some business in the area,” Catlin said as she picked out a frightening looking maul.  She put it in the cart before continuing, “We are all going with him just to be safe.”  Just then, Catlin had an inspiration.  “Hey!  You know what?  Even after we get your gear, you shouldn’t be alone in West Drop.  You can hang out with us until your mission is done.”

Brisa had to admit, that was exactly the kind of help she needed.  “That would be amazing.  I hope it won’t be a problem.”

“Don’t worry about it.  My friends would be happy to meet a reporter from Champion’s Chronicle.  We watch your station all the time.”

They kept searching through the shuttle shop for more equipment to complete Brisa’s gear set.  Catlin did most of the picking: a cloth mask with a ghastly mantis head painted over the face; blasters and daggers, neither of which Brisa knew how to use; spike accented leather chest armor that was just a little too heavy; ordinary cloth pants; boots and gloves made out of plated metal that were defiantly too heavy.  Each looked dreadful.  They didn’t seem to look good together either.

Both Catlin and Brisa kept joking at just how unprepared Brisa was for real combat.  Of course, combat wasn’t the goal.  No one would know her lack of abilities unless they tried to fight her.  The goal was to make her look like she was ready for combat.  With the right look she could avoid trouble.  Catlin kept promising her friends would be able to help her if things became dangerous.

Catlin walked to the fitting rooms pushing the cart while Brisa lagged behind carrying the maul Catlin had picked out earlier.  Even with the guns and daggers in the cart, the maul looked the most dangerous.

They reached the fitting rooms when Catlin noted her admiration, “I knew you’d like that.  That will be your primary weapon.”

Brisa blushed slightly.  Catlin was right.  The maul was pretty nice.  Brisa posed with it but could only hold the pose for half a second.  The maul was too heavy.

She looked at the rest of the gear.  Not only were they made from different kinds of materials, they were all different colors.  She trusted Catlin’s judgment but she couldn’t help but comment on the gear, “Th… they all look hideous.”

“You’ll fit right in,” was Catlin’s no nonsense answer, “Most adventurer equipment looks like this.”  Having seen a great deal of the world, Catlin knew what she was talking about.  In adventurer cities like West Drop, clothes were meant for function not fashion.

If Brisa showed up in matching armor she would become a target immediately.  A matching outfit meant that either she had bought everything at a shop and was weak or she was an ace warrior that had high ranking enemies and a large bounty.  “I just so happen to be a tailor and enchanter,” Catlin spoke into the fitting room, “If you need any alterations, it would be no problem.”

Brisa was trying to figure out where to put the more dangerous equipment Catlin chose for her.  Brisa was proud when she first put on the reporter uniform but it had to go.  She surely didn’t want to be attacked again.  The event at the shuttle pad was horrifying enough.  She would do anything to avoid landing in a rejuvenation center.

Still, she couldn’t help but think; this lady is really nice and is helping me too much.  Is there a cost?  “Why are you helping me,” Brisa asked.

“Are you kidding,” Catlin said.  The gleeful response made Brisa feel like a bigger celebrity that Jaquan Zu himself.  “My friends just wouldn’t believe that I met a reporter.  They’ll want to meet you.”

“Are you sure our situation won’t be a problem for your friends.  Remember that one lady I told you about in BigBad.  I had no idea she saw me,” Brisa said looking at her scorched bowtie now discarded with the rest of her uniform, “She’s a real piece of work.  I’m sure the other ones are dangerous too.”

Catlin giggled to herself before replying.  “We’ve seen quite a bit of action too,” she said, “I don’t think we’ll have too much to worry about.”
