Champions of Battle: AD7 – Awakening #16

AD7 returned to the group after the most important of tasks.  Her body signaled a short while ago that she drank quite enough water.  Walking back to the others, she had a little trouble moving naturally.  Perhaps it was a side effect of her recent reanimation.  However, she moved far better than the average champion would after rejuvenation.

GarDNAnge1 still waited for Cyd to finish working.  His shift had less than an hour left.  Oyintsa and Royal seemed the most tired of waiting, but wait they must.  Cyd was a rare find.  He knew much more than they ever could about rejuvenation.  He had studied the particulars of all the talent sets.  He also hated his job and wanted to go somewhere else.  They had this one chance to make sure he went with them.

As AD7 reached the couch, Tirzah made a suggestion based on her team’s complaints.  “Oyintsa, Royal, why don’t you take our friend outside and show her around while we wait,” she said.

They both stood up immediately; more than happy to do something, anything other than sit around.  AD7 was anxious to see what was outside as well.  The rejuvenation center was dark but nice and very clean.  She wanted to see the city that housed such a building.

As they reached the door, Royal tucked her hair back into her cloak preparing to raise her hood.  Oyintsa lifted his hood then turned to AD7.  “Just so you know friend,” he said in a solemn tone, “the city has changed a lot for the worse.”

AD7 heard him but didn’t listen.  She had already reached the solid metal doors eager to see what was on the other side.  The doors opened quickly as she pulled with surprising strength.

She was not prepared.

She walked out, staring in disbelief at the sight that assaulted her.  Weed stalks grew through cracks in the street.  Dead leaves and other debris were scattered everywhere.  The buildings that used to be houses and shops only served as fences for random plants growing through them.

However, she saw much more than what was apparent.  She also saw the city as it once was.  The weed stricken streets, every gutted house it was all hers once, hers and beautiful.  She could hear the echoes of children playing.  This city held great beauty but it was gone, all of it gone.

The memory hit her hard.  She had planned these streets and built them.  Her machines cut each pebble in the gravel road to fit together perfectly without the use of mortar.  The road she had finished was perfectly smooth.  She used to look at it in awe every time she went into town for supplies.

She had designed each house and shop personally.  Each was designed to the specifications of the owners.  Each of them was colorful and clean, as individual as the people that lived in them.  This city was beautiful, once.

A tear forms in her eye.  How long had she spent designing all the houses, the streets?  Enough time to drive the normal person crazy.  Perhaps she would have been crazy if not for her helper.  It was all for nothing.  Everything she had built was destroyed by time and neglect.  Now crying at the remains of her lovely city, she asked “How long was I out?”

“About forty five years,” Oyintsa replied.  He remembered Tirzah telling her that.  Perhaps she was so swamped with the new information that some of the minor details slipped from her.

“How did this happen,” AD7 continued, “M.. my wall… should have protected them.”  Then she remembered.  The wall!  She looked to the right, the general direction it used to be.  When she had left it, she could barely see it over the houseline.  Now, it was a dominant piece of the distant sky line easily towering over the distant trees.  Still, it too was in disrepair.  It even had a few missile-explosion sized holes in it.  “How long did it hold?”

“It lasted for a really long time,” Royal said.

“The fortress only fell about ten years ago,” Oyinsta added

AD7 thought of thirty five years of fighting.  She had no idea her helper was capable of the inhuman battling that must have taken place.  “My helper must have fought hard,” she said finally.

“Your helper,” Royal asked.

“I built her to help me build,” AD7 answered.  “She was a like part of me…or part of me,” AD7 stammered for a bit.  “It’s hard to explain,” she said finally, “She helped me talk to the machines but, she wanted… I can’t remember,”  AD7 said, truly wishing she could.  She tried hard to bring up the memory but it refused to appear.  She knew it was important but could not remember the simple fact.

At that, the three of them walked down the stairway and headed towards the populated areas.  They passed by what passed for a market it held little that was worth buying.  There was little here to attract bandits, much less keep them away.

As they walked, AD7 realized that Bosstown’s glory was far beyond reclaiming.  It would be best to stay with GarDNAnge1 and help them as best she could.  Wait, did he call my wall a fortress?

Bosstown Rejuvenation Center:

Team GarDNAnge1 waited with AD7 for Cyd to finish his shift.  It was very true that he hated his job but he had enough respect to at least finish his final shift.  However, the Blue Stone Reanimation Corporation could do without their three week notice.  It was only fair.  He had worked there for six years without any notice of a promotion or pay raise.

The five of them sat on a few large and very soft black couches in a side lobby.  As they talked, AD7 occasionally glanced at the counter.  It was busy.  Customers came and left with their revived allies.  The revived often limped or looked uncomfortable as they moved.

Occasionally, someone would enter with an unfortunate person; or a box.  So many hurt, dying, and dead people; was this new world so violent.  Was it just as violent in the old world too?  Maybe?  Possibly?  AD7 was still drawing blanks.

The bunch of them looked awkward staying in the lobby, a bit like loiterers.  They got a few strange looks but no one dared to say anything to the fearsome cloaked warriors and their slim orange and yellow companion.

AD7 had long since changed into more reasonable attire.  A plain t-shirt and a pair of pants complements of the Rejuvenation Center.  Light brown seemed to match her skin the best, slightly lighter pants and white shoes completed her outfit.

She guzzled water as fast as her body would absorb it while the members of GarDNAnge1 told her about the world.  They had removed their hoods and introduced themselves some time ago.  They seemed nice, granted she had only known them for a short while.

A great amount of the world had changed.  The city she loved had fallen on “hard times.”  Rubin’s Trail had gained a “presence” in the area.  New and mysterious combat schools were discovered including the Holy Talent Set that Hachiro used.  Of course, with all the things they were telling her, she couldn’t help but wonder what they were leaving out.

Most of the technical information they gave her it was over her head.  All she understood was that they needed her to build things.  She kept thinking the question.  If they were so powerful, why did they need help?

“What do you need built,” she asked the next time she had a chance to enter the conversation.  They looked at her confused which surprised her a bit.  It was like she gave a very wrong answer in a classroom.  “Did I say something wrong?”

Tirzah looked at her companions a bit longer then turned to AD7.  How much of the last two hours did AD7 comprehend?  Tirzah cleared her throat, “Let’s start again.  We are the lead portion of team Guardian Angel,” Tirzah said with pride.  They had earned that pride.  GarDNAnge1 was the lead team of what could be argued as one of the greatest clans in the entire world.  As such, everyone in the world knew their team name.  However, AD7’s eyes showed nothing resembling recognition.

“From Pure Order,” Tirzah continued with a little bit of hope.  If anything she knew their faction name.  The rivalry between Pure Order and Pure Wealth was legendary.  Again, AD7 responded with a blank gaze.  “We come from the city of Sanity,” Tirzah said almost frustrated.  Everyone in the world wanted to find the secret city of Sanity.  Not only did it hold a world famous clan, it held secret Hanja and enchantments that no other place could duplicate or disenchant.

It seemed that AD7 recognized that the three statements were supposed to mean something.  What they meant was beyond her.  Hachiro came up with the answer, “She’s too old to know about us Tirzah.”

AD7 flinched at his words.  She did not like being referred to as “too old.”  No matter how long she had been in storage, she looked just as old as they did.

It made sense to Tirzah though.  She began a new explanation, “We mostly battle on trails.  We don’t need you to build one thing.  The structures we need are buildings that build, train, and upgrade machines.  We use these machines and our skills to attack opponents while they attack us trying to force a surrender or retreat.”

AD7 had no idea how to respond.  She agreed to help these people as thanks for reviving her but it was all overwhelming.  “I’ve never done that before,” she said.  At least she had no memory of doing anything like that.  She remembered a wall that was about it.

“Don’t worry,” Tirzah said comforting.  She seemed very sure of AD7’s abilities.  She took a sip of water “compared to what you’ve already done, it should be easy.”

“Level head… level head… level head…” Adrianne repeated the words over and over again.  It sounded silly but it was one way to keep from focusing on the many negatives of her situation.

With Silent Blur’s weapons still set for her experiment, Adrianne had no choice but to keep running through the forest at far above recommended speeds.  Each tree was in the forward view for about a second before they were shrinking in the distance behind her.  In that time she had to twist and turn around several more trees while keeping track of what was happening on her scanners.  Captain Bubbles rocked and flipped around angrily with each twist warning her of her actions.

It was a shame she had to run.  The gankers avoided entering the canopy, so far.  The only weapons they seemed to use were the hover hunters.  The cloaking hunters never had thick armor.  They relied on surprise and disguise.  Their thin light shell aided their acceleration and battery life.  It also ruined their use in a basic fight.  One good hit from anything was all it took to break one.

If the gankers in the ships above needed the hover hunters to find her, she had a possible advantage.  The ships could outrun her, but the hover hunters already proved to have trouble when Silent Blur was at full speed.

As she was planning her next move, a rather large tree seemed to leap out of nowhere directly in front of her.  “What the… NOT GOOD,” Adrianne shouted to herself.  She twisted the ship and clawed at the ground.  She even used the rockets on Silent Blur’s wings to slow the ship.  She stopped mere centimeters from the tree, leaving scorch marks on the bark.  Full speed could be a little too dangerous.

She looked at the sensors again.  They showed her what she already knew.  The two cloaked ships were circling just over the canopy above her.  The hover hunters tried to keep up with her but were running out of power.  They were flying back up to the ships, perhaps to recharge.

Now that the immediate threat was on pause for a bit, she had to choose the best path back to Rubin’s Trail.  Only two ships were on her scanners.  The other two had to be around somewhere.  These gankers have proven to be well prepared before.  How they got so prepared, she didn’t know.  However, she didn’t want to run into any traps.

By now, she was running again and had reached Rubin’s River which flowed north from Rubin’s Mountains towards Rubin’s Trail.  There was little point in trying to hide from the gankers.  They already knew where she was.  She ran north along the river and conducted another long range scan of the known cloaking frequencies.  She also pinged for motion to see where all the ships were and where they were going.

They were leaving.

It took Adrianne a little time to trust that what she saw was real, but it was.  They were all turning around and heading back towards Rubin’s Mountain.  Surly nothing she had done caused them to fly away in such a hurry.  So what was it?

The answer came with the roar of the mighty sky guard fighters.  These ships didn’t hide their presence at all.  Even if they wanted to they’d have trouble.  There were at least eight of them flying in formation.  Apparently, the gankers were running away before they had a chance to lose the fight.

Adrianne heard a call on her ship communicator.  “This is Sky Guard Es-Gee-Five-Twelve calling Silent Blur,” the voice called calmly, “Greetings Dr. Yu.  Are you in need of any further assistance?”
