“What?!\u00a0 Metcalf!\u00a0 I TOLD<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0you this was going to happen!”\u00a0 Haruna Huai always had a way with words.\u00a0 She never sugar coated anything, especially to people she cared about.\u00a0 She would seem rude to an outsider but the truth people needed to hear was rarely kind. \u00a0She had known and cared for Metcalf for so long, they may as well have been sisters.<\/p>\n

The two of them were in the dining hall eating fruit and ice cream.\u00a0\u00a0 They were not out in the open like during breakfast.\u00a0 This time, they were in a room set aside for parties.\u00a0 There were few parties this time of year so they had the whole room pretty much to themselves.<\/p>\n

“Let me see it,” she said reaching for Metcalf’s handheld.\u00a0 Seeing Metcalf’s student rank, her eyes widened in shock.\u00a0 Then she said calmly, “Yeah, you’ll definitely have to take the final.”<\/p>\n

That was all it took for Metcalf to see her situation.\u00a0 She was in trouble.\u00a0 She had been at Spear Mint Academy for as long as she remembered.\u00a0 The people here were her family.\u00a0 Hardly anyone passes the final.\u00a0 And if she failed, she may never see her friends again.\u00a0 “So what can I do,” Metcalf asked herself out loud.<\/p>\n

Haruna picked up on the defeated sound in her voice.\u00a0 She jerked a hand into Metcalf’s face and snapped to get her attention.\u00a0 “One thing we can’t do is give up,” she said taking command of the situation, “You have six months, and lots of friends.\u00a0 We’re gonna fight this.”<\/p>\n

Haruna then took her own handheld and called up the gang one by one.\u00a0 They each expressed the predictability of Metcalf’s situation but agreed to help as best they could.\u00a0 They had a long six months.<\/p>\n

“Bye Manna,” Pinar called.<\/p>\n

“See you tomorrow,” he called back as he left.\u00a0 Tired but victorious he walked out into the sunlit chilly street headed home.\u00a0 Another day business was finished.\u00a0 The bakery was reasonably busy today.\u00a0 There were acceptable leftovers.\u00a0 He even kept some treats for himself to eat at home.<\/p>\n

Chef Thetis usually would let him do that when they had enough for the discount morning special.\u00a0 The day-old pastries would be sold at a discount the next day while the new ones were still being prepared.\u00a0 It was good business practices.\u00a0 In storage, the pastries would stay reasonably good overnight.\u00a0 Also, the scent of the new pastries baking would overwhelm the senses and cause the hungry to buy more than they needed.<\/p>\n

“Well, another eighty notes,” Manna said to himself as he walked down the street.\u00a0 It wasn’t enough to make a large dent in his debt, but he was making some headway.\u00a0 It was enough to pay down some interest for this month.\u00a0 He would be free eventually.<\/p>\n

Walking down the chilly street, he saw a face he remembered from earlier in the bakery, then another.\u00a0 They were leaning against walls, sitting in cars, hanging out on corners, trying and failing to look ordinary.\u00a0 There were about six of them.\u00a0 They were all people that didn’t recognize him during his grand entrance to the bakery.\u00a0 Or maybe they did.<\/p>\n

Manna didn’t speed up.\u00a0 He knew they’d follow him no matter where he went.\u00a0 He turned down an alley a parking area in the back of a warehouse.\u00a0 He made his way to a wall and waited to see how long it would take them to catch up.\u00a0 Using his magnetism skills again, he readjusted his robe to give himself more freedom of motion.<\/p>\n

Just as he expected, the six of them came around the corner a little while following him.\u00a0 Thankfully they didn’t have guns, but their bats, canes, and crowbars seemed to have a specific purpose.<\/p>\n

Despite this, Manna only smiles and bows, his orange face serene, his motions practiced.\u00a0 Still smiling he says “Greetings friends.\u00a0 How may I help you?”<\/p>\n
