There was no known land route to Bear Gate; or air route actually. \u00a0Pilots would waste an entire evenings searching for the city with no sign. \u00a0There were however, widespread rumors of it being somewhere south of West Drop. \u00a0No one knew exactly where. \u00a0Pictures from inside the city depicted a rustic rural place with hints of modern technology scattered about. \u00a0Regardless of the rumors, Jaquan and his companions were headed there. \u00a0At least they had every reason to believe they were. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The tunnel they entered a half hour ago was marked to lead them there; as was the subway car they boarded. \u00a0Jaquan occasionally checked his communicator\u2019s compass, and for the third time it stated that they were headed northwest. \u00a0Despite the discrepancy with known facts, there was nothing he could do about the travel plans now. \u00a0They were in the car and no amount of unwarranted panicking would make any difference. \u00a0Besides, he wanted to keep up appearances in front of Justice.<\/span><\/p>\n

The subway car was much like any other only exceptionally clean, and empty. \u00a0Shiny compressed steel surfaces were highlighted with burgundy cushions. \u00a0There were windows but there was no point in looking through them. \u00a0Bright lights from the tunnel whipped passed and didn\u2019t add anything to the trip.<\/span><\/p>\n

The crew\u2019s luggage was packed away in a pushable cart just on the other side of the car. \u00a0As much as Jaquan wanted to train by carrying the load, he didn\u2019t want risk pushing himself too far so near the tournament. \u00a0The maker of their healing water was off on an adventure leaving them no hints when she\u2019d be back.<\/span><\/p>\n

Again, he looked at the compass hologram. \u00a0\u00a0He blinked as it shifted slightly, pointing their direction more northward. \u00a0Instead of revealing a worried face, Jaquan looked up and heard Justice talk about the tournament\u2019s specifics. \u00a0Justice made certain to stress that Jaquan should be especially careful not to lose any of the opening rounds.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhy not?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Liana slapped her face in frustration, \u201cListen for a bit will you,\u201d she pleaded, \u201cThis is a coin based tournament.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Jaquan\u2019s confused face told Liana and Justice that Jaquan\u2019s mind had been <\/span>elsewhere<\/span><\/i> for the last fifteen minutes. \u00a0So after a deep inhale and purposeful exhale, Justice started again. \u00a0\u201cA coin based tournament is like this.\u201d \u00a0He thought for a bit to put things in terms that Jaquan could understand. \u00a0\u201cAt the beginning of the tournament, all the fighters have two coins credited to an account,\u201d he paused again to make sure he was saying everything correctly and that Jaquan was following, \u201cAt the end of a fight, the winner gets a coin from the loser. \u00a0If at any point you run out of coins you\u2019re out of the tournament.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSo why do I have to be careful in the beginning?\u201d Jaquan asked. \u00a0The thought of losing was never a good one. \u00a0To go through so much to acheive nothing was such a waste of time, money, and effort. \u00a0He wanted to avoid it at all cost. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOh. \u00a0I forgot,\u201d Justice corrected himself, \u201con the third round, the bank takes a coin from everyone still in the tournament. \u00a0They keep doing that every other round until only one player remains.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOh!\u201d Jaquan realized the severity now, \u201cThat changes everything.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSo,\u201d Liana chimed in to conclude the original point, \u201cHe was saying that if you don\u2019t maintain a winning record during the first four matches, you\u2019re done. \u00a0Even a tied record causes elimination.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe chumps and wanna-bes are eliminated early.\u201d \u00a0This was truly going to be a challenge. \u00a0In a tournament such as this, everyone will be on top of their game. \u00a0Everyone will be looking for an edge on whoever they fight. \u00a0“So who am I fighting first?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Justice leaned back in his chair, covered his face with his hands and purposefully exhaled again, \u201cI have no idea.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
