Champions of Battle: The Very Best – Opportunity #037

“How did you know to come to this particular alley?”  Detective Coye Han asked about the alley scene but not as a sympathetic investigator.  His skin was a dark eggshell color, almost an off grey.  Large light violet patches crept up to cover a large portion of the left side of his face.

His clothes were not in disrepair, just very well used.  A dark green hat and matching wind coat with the proud symbol of the yellow West Drop Sunflower just under his left collar.  His eyes were keen but struggled to stay open.  He had rushed into this scene as a response to their call.  His flashing communicator spoke that he would be rushing off to another scene soon.

“I was checking all the alleys,” Catlin replied, “We stopped when we saw this.”  She pointed to all the bloodstains and slash marks in the alley.

Catlin had been separated from Neely who was around the alley’s corner talking to another detective, basic procedure.  However, this was the third way these same questions were asked.  While waiting for original questions, Catlin’s focus shifted to more important matters.

She had a wonderful view of guards searching through the stolen gear and the guards were acting strangely because of it.  Initially, each item was so light that the guards couldn’t help but lift the items high enough for Catlin to see.  Strangely, each item gained its original weight after Catlin was convinced that she didn’t make it.

“Who was it you say you were looking for again?”

“Oh, a friend I met on the shuttle.”

The detective caught the bit of hesitation.  “If she is your friend, why did she run away from you?”

“She didn’t run away from me she ran into the city.  Loads of people saw her run this way, with someone else.”

“Someone that wasn’t you?”

“Yes.”

“And you followed?”

“Only after I learned that she may be attacked.”

The detective tried but couldn’t find any way to refute her response.  As such, there was no reason for him to hold her, yet.  He had the statement stored well in his mind and on a recorder.  “You’re free to go but stay around for a bit,” the detective added in a mock tour guide voice, “See the sights.”

Catlin shifted her attention to the detective just in time to catch the dismissal, “Sure.”

She didn’t hear everything he had just said but it wasn’t important.  She was quite done with the alley; satisfied that none of the gear she had made was here.

Catlin’s gear products were good, really good but were not the best.  Trolls that would steal armor from Champions would only keep the best items and discard the rest, in a pile.  She released an audible sigh following the logic that Brisa had not met with these gankers.  That was almost enough info for now.

Neely could be right again.  Brisa could be doing fine but it’s better to be sure.

Catlin walked around the corner where Neely’s interview was finishing as well.  At the news of her finding, she expecting to see his common “I told you so” face.  What she saw instead was a face that renewed concern.

Neely was emotionless and stared through Catlin’s eyes as she spoke.  His tone was unusually stone cold as well, “We should head to an inn.  It’s getting late.”

From past experiences, Catlin knew not to argue with Neely when he got like this.  Instead, she followed his cue, “Are there any nearby.”

In response, Neely revealed a keypad under the armor on his arm.  After a little button pushing, a 3D hologram of the city projected from his armor into the space between them.  Solid skyblue and crimson dots marked their current location in the city and the places they had visited in the city appeared in much greater detail.

Hotels throughout all of West Drop were shaded in green standing out among the hollow grey buildings they had not gone near.  Each hotel was named and a set of rankings were represented by lines of gold, blue, and black dots just above the roofs.  Catlin knew that in a city like this the safety of the hotel was the most important value.

Catlin ignored the gold dots; price was not an issue.  She looked for blue dots as the hotels needed to have available rooms.  However, she focused on the hotel’s black dots.  Also, a high top floor was a must.  She naturally chose the hotel with the least black dots and a high top floor.

Not questioning her choice at all, Neely shut down the image and started running through the city again.  Catlin followed but her thoughts went elsewhere.

Catlin immediately worried about Brisa again.  She needed to know if Brisa was doing well.  The inability to know burned in her mind.  Sure, Brisa hadn’t run into these gankers but there were other threats to be had in a city such as West Drop.

However, these worries had to wait for another day.  Catlin had seen Neely in this mood many times since he had learned his Holy Talent Set.  She had ignored Neely exactly once when he was like this.  She was going to follow him this time.

Catlin and Neely dashed through the back alleys of West Drop for a sign; any possible signs of struggles.  Catlin needed to search thoroughly but she knew they were running out of time.  If the city’s citizens were to be believed, Brisa was seen running with a young lady down these very alleys a few hours ago.

When there were fewer people around, Catlin searched more intently.  She knew the gankers attacked quickly and efficiently.  They would attack where they would not be seen, kill the target, and take what they wanted.  Catlin hoped that Brisa found a way to escape the trap and get away, but with Brisa’s perception the way it was, chances were slim.

Though Neely’s movements were aided by his new mech suit, Catlin often left him behind as they frantically searched each and every alleyway.  Catlin hoped to find Brisa whole and alive.  Soon, every bend became a dramatic event.  With every empty or otherwise used alleyway, Catlin praised that Brisa wasn’t found harmed yet was frustration that Brisa wasn’t found at all.

The pair had come to what seemed like another dead end.  They had searched the area’s set of back alleys with no trace of Brisa yet.  They were very near a populated area, a shopping complex.  There, they had turned to an alley they had barely seen with Catlin’s rushed pace.

About half an hour ago, they had gained the attention of a guard though he lagged far behind them both.  He was strangely unconvinced that Brisa had been taken this way even though every townsfolk up to this point had said otherwise.  They searched through the alley for evidence but found none of Brisa.

After a few minutes, the guard jogged around the corner.  They learned his name was Sasuke Si, a new recruit that apparently has not finished his endurance training.  Bent over and out of breath he barely managed to speak, “I think… we should go… to head… quarters… get more men… looking.”

At this the pair stared at each other and then at him, in awe.  They were astonished as his actions showed utter incompetence.  In the alley, there were blood stains, sword slashed walls, and many other signs of numerous struggles.  This may not have been where Brisa was lead, but it definitely was worth looking into.

Catlin’s eyes turned flame red though she asked calmly, “What do we have to look for?”

At almost the same time, Neely spoke up, “I think you should call this in.”

Taking in the sight of the bloody alleyway, Sasuke staggered back and had to agree.  He promptly left the alley and reached for his handheld.

Looking at the guard walk away, Catlin knew he would be of no help.  She searched deeper into the alley and found a locked door that she knew had to lead somewhere.  Waving Neely to her area, she asked, “Do you think this is the place?”

“This has to be the place,” he responded, “The rest stop guy clearly said there was a singular group of gankers.”  He reasoned further, “The townsfolk also said that the same lady had brought other people in this way.”

“And this is where they went,” Catlin reasoned.

Neely’s handheld buzzes.  He answers and finds Liana on the other end.  Apparently he and Catlin had lost track of time because it was nearing hour seventeen.  Jaquan wanted to leave for Bear Gate immediately.

Neely understood his rush, Jaquan had taken a big risk setting aside his pride for this opportunity.  However, looking at Catlin’s face Neely knew that she wanted to stay in West Drop and find Brisa.  “I’m sorry,” he said, “Could you go on without us?  We’ll catch up to you guys soon.”

“Alright, see you th…,” were Liana’s words as her image faded from his handheld.

As they kept walking through West Drop, Kiley kept phasing out of vision.  About every thirty seconds he would vanish completely only to slowly phase back.  He’d reappear; keeping pace as though nothing had happened.  Others on the street had to notice this spectacle.  Brisa’s eyes darted around each time he disappeared.  No one on the street seemed to care but since he was leading her to the Kinetic-Potential Talent School.  It was getting annoying.

After about six minutes of this, she had to ask, “Why do you keep doing that?”

He turned around, walking backwards to address her, “That droid is still up there,” he said pointing up and behind her.  He disappeared again and continued, “Whyever it’s following you, I don’t want it to start tracking me too.”  The ghost of his image started phasing back into her vision.  He was walking forward again right next to her now as he said, “I’m throwing it off of my track.”

Brisa looked back again.  Up down all around, she couldn’t see it.  “How do we get rid of it?”

Kiley thought a bit before answering.  “Well, usually those things aren’t sturdy.  They use energy to float and for defense.  All we have to do is hit it hard enough to get through its energy fields.”

Brisa looked at Kiley expectantly.  After a few paces she thought he would hit it with something.  Seeing that he didn’t, she thought she’d speed up the process, “Well?”

It took a while Kiley to get the hint.  “Oh,” he said surprised, “I can’t hit it.  It’s way too high for me to jump,” he looked at Brisa noting that she was not convinced, “and my ranged weapons are too weak to do any damage.  They’d just bounce off its deflector and… yeah.  But I can see it because of my talents and perception.”

Brisa remembered the perception Hanja on her mask.  She should be able to see a great deal more than usual.  If she couldn’t see it, his natural perception had to be incredible.  “Ok, so we have to wait,” she said looking at where Kiley’s voice had just came from.  He was gone; yet again.  Really?  Again?  Her eyes expressed her frustration at talking to nothing once more.  She was equally shocked when a casually loud voice came from the empty air she was looking through.

“Maybe you can find a skill that will help you in here,” Kiley said as he was phasing back into her view, “The Caster Talent School is in there too,” he said pointing at the strange building in front of them, “Maybe you can hit it with your large axe-hammer thing.”

Brisa thought about the maul Catlin got and enchanted for her.  She’d have to thank Catlin; if she ever decided to talk to her again.  Brisa looked up at the school.  This is a school?

The large building looked more like a mystic’s night club; or a giant playground.  The rounded walls made the building look like someone squished a bunch of giant clay balls together. The painter had to be completely color blind and the spinning orbs floating above closely resembled disco balls.  The fact that they floated was the only indication that there could be anything to learn here.

Brisa had to be certain, “This is a school.”  It was meant as a question.  However, her voice reflected severe doubt.  From this building, she’d have trouble believing it was a school even if she was met by a welcoming committee.

“This is the school,” Kiley told her.  To prove it, he walked with her up to the circled window to watch the students practicing the Kinetic-Potential techniques.

Brisa still didn’t believe him completely but she had no choice but to see for herself.  After thanking him, she headed for what looked like the entrance.

“You’re welcome,” Kiley said eagerly, “Good luck in the tournament!”
