Sons of Sword: Tales of Glory – Lost and Found #6

Metcalf and Isabeau walked quietly to the preparation area, a separate room above and behind the seating area of the shooting range.  Often the challengers created quite a bit of noise while preparing for their matches.  Armor would bump.  Ammunition would fall.  The challengers would talk.  Behind the soundproof wall, they could do what they needed without disturbing the observers.

Once inside preparation area, they could relax.  Having been there many times, they knew exactly what to do.  The first thing was to select the height of the towers they were to stand on.  Taller towers were safer, of course, but made for harder targeting.  Metcalf selected the tallest tower setting, Isabeau did the same.

Then, they selected the weapons they would use for the challenge.  It was common for a student to have two or more different sets of weapons.  One weapon was never good enough for all situations.  When long distance weapons were used, they needed to be effective for the situation.

It was an easy choice for Metcalf.  Her short bow, Blue, was her primary distance weapon.  Its size was quite deceptive as the draw strength was unnaturally great.  She needed to use her motion energy skills to pull the string far enough to fire.

The Seeds, Metcalf’s collection of seed shaped throwing knives, were more for mid-range fighting.  Rasz and Black were dead weight in this case.  Keeping any of these weapons on her armor would only add unneeded weight.  They were better kept in her gear bag.

Isabeau’s choice in this matter was even easier than Metcalf’s.  She had only one long range weapon.  Her ash colored crossbow, matched her armor perfectly.  Hummer looked like any other crossbow except there was an empty space under the loading area.  The long hole was surrounded by a sliding contraption with two silver circles at the front.

The next matter was to select the students they wanted the training-bots to imitate.  The school kept track of each student’s fighting style and abilities.  The only thing different about the bots was energy abilities.  It was impossible for the bots to use them.  Wanting this to be a short battle, both Metcalf and Isabeau chose the most aggressive students they knew.

Preparations complete, they had a bit of time to wait while they stood in queue.  Metcalf was very curious about how Hummer worked.  Blue was quite basic, but Hummer seemed almost like old and new technology combined.  “I thought crossbows were only good at short ranges.”

Isabeau noticed Metcalf was interested in her weapon.  Taking ideas from another student’s design was natural.  Everyone in the training center wanted an edge, something to help them get to the next level.  “Most are, but this one is special,” she said as she gestured to trade weapons with Metcalf while they waited.  Metcalf agreed.  “Hummer’s draw strength is incredibly strong.  I need this machine to pull the string back.”  She pointed at the sliding contraption Metcalf noticed earlier.

“How did the Founders to approve this?”  Metcalf asked.  Hummer seemed too much like a gun.

It was the Grand Master’s philosophy that Protectors should use their skills in some way in almost every aspect of combat.  Guns and blasters required little to no skill, only steady hands.  Even a slightly trained Commoner can master their use.  Protectors were called in to save Commoners.  Commoners didn’t need the kind of help they could give each other.

“It was Forge Master Sef’s idea.  He said it was alright if I powered it myself.”  She held out her gloved hand.  The glove was covered in rubber everywhere except the top of her index finger and thumb, the two points that would be in contact with the silver buttons on Hummer.  Instead those fingers were tipped with silver.  With a brief amount of focus, she caused quite a very large spark between them.  “Something about a loophole in the rules,” she said smiling.  The spark lasted a half second more, then died.

“Nice,” was her immediate reaction, then she thought about the personal implications.  “Does it hurt?”

“Not really,” Isabeau stopped and corrected herself. “Yes,” she said definitely, “but when you expect the shock, you can brace for it.”  Isabeau took her time inspecting Blue, amazed at its simplicity.  For a short bow, Blue was surprisingly heavy, like really heavy.  She pulled at the string with all her might, almost to the point of looking comical.  Even at the point of breaking a sweat, she simply could not move it more than half a millimeter.  “I think Forge Master Lai designed some special armor for his great, great grand niece using the same type of technology.  Makes her faster and stronger.”

Metcalf thought back to Naoh and how fast she moved and how utterly she defeated her opponent in the three strike drill before, “Yeah.”

“Ok.  Last points of business.”

“Right almost forgot,” she said honestly.  They were having fun and almost immediately became friends.  However, they would not be there at all if they were not wagering Academy Points.  So what was the amount, twenty per target?  That would be recoverable if she lost.  Surely, a hundred points per target would have to be the most anyone would want to bet.  That would be a fantastic start for the day if she won.

“How does a thousand points sound?”

Champions of Battle: AD7 – Awakening #10

Adrianne tried to call for help but the gankers were too smart for that.  Her communications, even her radio failed to function properly.  She would have to get out from the range of their jamming signal before she could call anyone.  This looked very bad.  She was so far from civilization that by the time help could arrive, they would have pillaged Silent Blur and left.

Who knew what they wanted?  No doubt they saw her test the incendiary missile.  If they stole the plans before Rubin’s Trail got hold of it, they could make a fortune.  It burned hot enough and stuck long enough to melt metal.  They could disable or forcibly enter a ship without completely destroying it, leaving more plunder for them.

They could have seen her defensive devices.  With her modifications, they were better than the best on the market.  Three were capable of warding off even the larger predators.  She had twenty four.  Now that they were in storage mode they could be reprogrammed by any tinkerer.  They’d be worth quite a bit on the auctions as would Silent Blur.

Maybe they just felt like killing something.

What they wanted was trivial.  If they caught her, they would kill her without a second thought and take whatever they could.  It would be forever and five days before she recovers in a rejuvenation center.  And that’s only if she remains undigested by some wild beast.

She has to escape.

Adrianne had a slight advantage.  They were counting on her to remain ignorant of their attack until it was too late.  She possibly had a few extra seconds to prepare for the long sprint to Rubin’s Trail.

She also had a fairly extensive knowledge of these woods.  She had run all around this place to test the Silent Blur’s leg modifications and Captain Bubbles’ functions.  She has a good chance of outfoxing them leaving them with little more than wasted fuel.

She unlocked the vehicle legs.  Outside the ship, they rattled in place waiting to be activated.  Inside the cockpit, her seating changed as well.  She was strapped tightly into the chair but as she activated the legs, her seat flipped forward so that she was in a crawling position.  The ship was designed to run like a squirrel.  In this position she could control things so much better.

As soon as Silent Blur’s legs were activated, they hung loose.  They caught wind, slowing the ship considerably.  As she expected, the gankers knew that something was wrong.  They picked up speed to catch her before she did anything too smart.

There were in fact four of them.  They were catching up to her quickly.  She pinged their vectors again.  Each of them was easily faster than Silent Blur.  There was little room for error if she was to get out of this alive.  Timing was everything, even now.

The trees looked beautiful flying above them.  Diving into them was always a different story.  The beautiful leaves had many healthy branches holding them up.  There was no way to be fully prepared for entry at high speeds, but they were approaching weapons range.  She was running out of time.

She rolled the ship and deactivated the wings.  The hydraulic legs were extended and ready.  With her sensors set to gain as much information as possible, she dove in.

Champions of Battle: The Very Best – Opportunity #9

Close to early evening, they were all packed and ready to go.  The sky began its cycle of twilight shades as the sun prepared to set.  Before long the blue sky would fade to indigo.

Bome City’s defensive turrets scanned grass and the skies just as they always have looking for the slightest hint of danger.  A grid of massive turrets throughout the city perched on the tallest buildings and also set on towering pillars.  Not all of the pillars held the powerful cannons.  As large as the wildlife was, many times a simple bright light or loud noise could scare them off back into the wild.

The Bome’s Prime Minister insisted they be placed all around his kingdom evenly to protect all the people from any wild life that would approach as well as any raiders that would try their luck.  The turrets were everywhere, threatening to tarnish the city’s beautiful skyline.  A tower was even present at the shuttle station where Justice met with Jaquan’s team.

They all looked different now, dressed in traveling gear.  Liana was in her metal mech suit complete with a mask that covered her face.  Jaquan and Neely repeatedly told her it was a horrible idea for her to wear the helmet, but Liana insisted on being able to protect them and herself from whatever may come.

Neely had a heavy looking bag slung over his shoulder.  He stood apart from them with Catlin who wore normal clothing and brass knuckles.  They all had various Hanja on their clothing to enhance certain aspects of their strengths.

Justice was telling Jaquan and Liana about the city they were going to stay and the further steps they would have to take to get to the town that held the tournament.  It seemed like it could become a dangerous trek, only one suitable for someone used to fighting wild beasts.  Liana was quite unhappy about the trek.  Jaquan seemed only a little more welcoming to the thought.

“Getting there is half the fun,” Justice reassured them.

This did not gain any reassurance points with Liana, but a decision was a decision.  They were going.  Neely’s drunken rage set them all strait.  He reminded them why they started in the fight game in the first place.

Neely was the only one still foggy on the details of how they got to this point.  He had asked Liana but she insisted that Catlin knew best about what happened.  As he spoke to Catlin, she enjoyed giving tiny bits of information.

“Why would I ask for poison?”

“The drink I think is designed to have it.”

“So I asked for the drink,” he said riddling out the situation.  “And I knew the poison was added to the drink?”

“Yes it is quite popular with ladies.  The fruit juice usually…” Catlin’s eyes suddenly changed to an unfriendly gaze.  Her mannerisms changed along with her gaze.  No longer was she a silly child teasing her brother about the secret he may never know.  She was the alert warrior that knew something was misplaced, invisible but certain.  Having seen this gaze many times, Neely picked up on the change and translated it correctly.

“Empowerment aura and light please,” she whispered.  Her eyes quickly faded black her irises turning a brilliant red.  She pointed with them to the pillar about a meter behind her.

Neely activated his empowerment aura signified by a dim silver sphere extending about four and a half centimeters from him in all directions.  Along with it, a bright outline of gold closely surrounded his body.  Standing close to him, Catlin was completely engulfed by the aura.

Neely took a simple looking handle from his pocket and held it inside the pack he was carrying.  Gears and machines whirled and within four seconds he was holding a fully functional and strung compound bow, small but really strong.

He pulled an arrow from the pack.  It caught fire as he shot it at the pillar.  Just as it would have hit the pillar, Catlin motioned with her hand for it to go around the pillar.  The arrow obeyed perfectly and landed on the other side of the pillar with a flash bright enough to be visible in the daylight.  Along with the flash: The shadow of a very surprised person with a handheld.

With anger in her mind and hands encircled with dark red flames, she performed a gripping motion in the spy’s direction and performed a pulling motion in the air towards her chest.  In that split second motion, the spy was delivered from behind the pillar directly in front of them.

By now they had the attention of the whole team as well as a few onlookers.  Her cover blown, hanging in the air at Catlin’s thinning mercy, the spy had only one thing to say.

“Um… Hello,” she started nervously, “I’m Brisa Gan with the Champion’s Chronicle.”
